I want to start Part 2 by carrying forward the point that sparked the most reactions in the first article: Palantir's CTO just called AI America's potential "slingshot" against China. He's right — but not for the reasons most people think.

The real AI race isn't about who builds smarter algorithms. It's about who builds smarter systems around them. And right now, the U.S. has an infrastructure problem.

In a recent Fox News interview, Shyam Sankar, CTO and Executive Vice President at Palantir Technologies, described AI as America's potential economic multiplier — a technology that could dramatically increase productivity and enable the re-industrialization of the U.S. economy if deployed strategically. That framing matters. But the part that often gets skipped is the "deployed strategically" requirement — because it forces us to talk about something less exciting than models.

Power.

Infrastructure Is Becoming the Real Constraint

When I wrote about the data-center surge in September 2025, most people were focused on capacity. Six months later, the conversation is shifting into something more urgent: electricity.

I call it the electron gap — the widening mismatch between AI ambition and the electrical capacity required to run AI at scale. This gap may end up being one of the biggest determinants of who leads in AI over the next decade.

If AI is the productivity engine, data centers and energy supply are the fuel system. And fuel is now a strategy issue.

The Electron Gap

Here's the simplest way to describe it: AI compute isn't "cheap" if the electrons aren't available — reliably, affordably, and fast enough to support expansion.

In the U.S., the bottleneck is often speed:

  • Power generation coming online
  • Interconnection approvals moving through the queue
  • Transmission capacity constraints at the regional level
  • Community pushback on large-scale infrastructure siting
  • The sheer time it takes to build anything grid-related at scale

Meanwhile, China's model can be advantaged in different ways — especially through coordinated industrial planning and infrastructure execution in priority sectors.

AI leadership won't be determined by algorithms alone. It will be determined by whether nations can build the physical and digital ecosystems required to operationalize intelligence at scale.

That's the electron gap as I see it: AI capability is increasingly constrained by grid reality. And it reinforces the core thesis from Part 1.

Regional Infrastructure Competition (U.S.)

The U.S. isn't standing still. We're seeing major activity across multiple regions — each with different strengths:

Texas: Energy development, available land, and a fast-moving growth culture make it a leading destination for new data center investment.

Virginia: "Data center alley" maturity and dense fiber ecosystems give it an established infrastructure advantage.

Arizona: Growing capacity, with power strategy increasingly becoming the central planning variable.

But the race isn't just "who builds." It's who builds fast enough, reliably enough, and sustainably enough to maintain an advantage — without triggering reliability issues or runaway costs for the communities that bear the load.

The Chip Chokepoint Is Still Real

Energy isn't the only constraint. Semiconductors remain a visible pressure point too. Export controls, supply chain risk, and "trusted ecosystem" requirements are now part of the AI arms race — whether we call it that publicly or not.

And the practical implication is this: even if you have the best data and the best model strategy, you can still get boxed in by:

  • Chip availability and allocation constraints
  • Compute pricing volatility across cloud and on-premises environments
  • Supply chain restrictions driven by geopolitical decisions
  • Dependency on vendors or regions that introduce strategic fragility

The organizations and nations that build resilient access to compute across the full supply chain will have a durable advantage. Those that don't will find themselves exposed when the constraints tighten.

A Strategic Paradox

There's a tension here that doesn't get discussed enough.

The U.S. benefits from open innovation, private-sector leadership, and research dynamism. China benefits from coordinated national investment and industrial-scale execution. Both models carry real advantages — and real vulnerabilities.

The question isn't who has the better slogans. It's who can build the real-world systems that make AI operational at national scale — and keep them running.

That requires something neither pure market competition nor top-down planning does well on its own: honest coordination around infrastructure constraints, shared cost responsibilities, and long-term investment horizons that don't fit neatly into quarterly earnings cycles.

What This Means Practically — Especially for Leaders

For organizations trying to move AI from pilot to production, these aren't abstract policy issues. They're operational realities:

  • Can your infrastructure support AI workloads beyond demos?
  • Is your power strategy stable enough to sustain growth?
  • Do you have resilient access to compute and supply chains next year — not just today?
  • Are you building systems that make AI trustworthy, auditable, and deployable?

AI doesn't fail in production because the model isn't smart. It fails because the system around it can't support it. And the organizations that internalize this early — and build accordingly — will be the ones still standing when others are doing expensive post-mortems on failed deployments.

Closing

Part 1 focused on the "slingshot" narrative and why the U.S. advantage won't come from smarter algorithms alone. Part 2 is the hard follow-up: we can't scale intelligence without scaling infrastructure.

In Part 3, I'll bring this down to ground level in healthcare — where trust, governance, and data integrity will decide whether AI becomes a breakthrough or a backlash. The electron gap is a national-scale story. But healthcare has its own version of it, and it's playing out right now in imaging departments, data warehouses, and governance frameworks across the country.

Both conversations deserve more attention than they're getting.
